Children

Countdown to success

Do you have trouble getting your child to complete a task in a reasonable amount of time? Get a timer. Give a reasonable amount of time, and then tell them they need to be finished when the timer goes off. Instead of a power struggle, it’s child against timer, not child against parent. This works best in combination with statements like: “When you finish, you can…”. Remember: Never reset the timer. No second chances. The purpose is to learn to complete tasks in a reasonable amount of time. If you reset the timer again after it goes off, the child will be in control, not you. In order for this to work, you must be firm. Help them learn to compete against the timer, not your willpower.
